Potatoes, Onions, & Carrots Monthly Price Data for Istanbul, Turkey 2019-2020

Monthly data measures potatoes, onions, and carrots price data for Istanbul, Turkey. Thus, this data gives a better perspective of what people actually pay on the street. In general, raw data here gives us a better perspective.

The basket (potatoes, onions, and carrots) include the following:

  1. Potatoes

2. Onions

3. Carrots

Data will collected weekly from a local street market and local retailers. Recording prices will be in local currency and entered on a spreadsheet. The focus is on standard quality of the goods in kilograms.

Also, additional data is collected on other food items.

August: Onion prices were stable whereas carrot prices ticked up. In addition, potato prices jumped around a little.

September: This data remained fairly stable throughout much of the month. September is usually the peak output month for onion and potatoes.

October: Street Inflation Index data points to a decrease in prices. Prices have probably bottomed out due to peak harvest season ending.

November: The data for November seems to have bottom out. However, now is starting to slightly rise in this basket of staples.

December inflation data for the above basket of vegetables was fairly stable.

  • Onions: 2.25 TRY
  • Carrots: 3 TRY

Prices have slowly started to increase with the inflation data and weak currency.

March inflation data shows potatoes prices spiking whereas onion and carrot prices are fairly stable.

  • Potatoes: 4.25 TRY
  • Onions: 2.50 TRY
  • Carrots: 3 TRY

As the Coronavirus started to spread, the government announced quarantine measures. Thus, many people rushed to the markets to stock up on food items. Potatoes were in high demand, so the prices increased. Also, there was a depreciation in the local currency. This put additional pressure on prices.

Onion prices averaged 3TL during April

It is clear, prices continue to rise. Also, Turkey has started to import more potatoes.

Prices spiked for carrots during April. Some vendors were charging as much as 6TL.

Potato prices in Istanbul for May, 2020 averaged 3.5 TRY in the Bazaars and 3.0 TRY in local markets. However, prices dropped after the government threatened to check for price gouging and a more stable lira.

Onion prices dropped to 2.5 TRY on the average.

Carrot prices in Istanbul, Turkey May 2020

Carrot prices in May, 2020 remained high in Istanbul throughout May. Also, the Bazaars tended to charge more for carrots; however, the quality was much better than the local markets. The markets averaged 4 TRY whereas the Bazaars charged around 5 TRY.

Potato prices in Istanbul for June, 2020 were steady at around 3TRY per kilogram in the market. However, prices at the Bazaars were around 3.5TRY (higher grade of potato).

Onion prices averaged around 2TRY per kilogram.

Carrot prices for June, 2020 averaged 4TRY per kilogram, but the quality was lower.

Potato prices in Istanbul decreased to around 2.50TRY per kilogram. Also, the chain discount markets were a little cheaper but the quality grade was lower.

Onion prices were fairly stable during July averaging around 2-2.50 per kilogram.

Carrot prices Istanbul July 2020

Carrot prices in Istanbul slightly increased and averaged around 5 TRY per kilogram. Furthermore, the quality grade was also lower.
