A brief perspective on the evolution of rapid urban change in Istanbul for generation Y&Z’s and its profound effects

Istanbul’s urban city transformation has had adverse consequences for Y&Z’s generation. It all started over a decade ago when unchecked construction, real estate and corruption changed the landscape. In addition, migration, immigration and the 3 kid’s policy added more numbers to the already stretched city resources. As the concrete poured and numbers swelled, society changed along with many traditions. Thus, this in turn resulted in social and moral decline from overpopulation and rapid change. Below is a brief before/after synopsis of what has evolved.

Before the change:

  • No polarization (people got along better)
  • public and private recreation
  • More entertainment options (I don’t consider a mall as entertainment)
  • Open spaces to enjoy (parks and recreation)
  • Shorter apartment buildings
  • Stronger family bonds
  • Traditional values
  • More respect and care for others
  • Economic equality
  • happier looking faces
  • Less traffic and noise + pollution
  • More social respect

Now:

  • Debt (easy credit)
  • Materialism (rich and poor gap)
  • Individualism (selfish, self-centered, me only)
  • Video game addiction (males)
  • Cellphone addiction + social media
  • Increased smoking + e-cigarettes
  • Killing time at cafes & shopping malls
  • Increased divorce and domestic violence
  • Consumerism and reckless spending
  • Emotionalist
  • Suspicions (polarization)
  • smaller families

In general, the synopsis above is based on my observations only. Also, I didn’t consider the more conservative populous that tend to have their own social dynamics. However consumerism and materialism have penetrated even the more religious. Thus, over a longer period of time, this group may change as well.

In conclusion, it is clear that Istanbul’s city transformation has let to a different form of urbanism. Also it will probably continue to change in the next decade too. Hopefully, the negative aspects listed above will not evolve to something worse.

In short, Istanbul: Y&Z City & Urbanism is based on the facts and projections. Also, empirical and conceptual research method were applied.
